Nature’s Lines

This 27” by 24” piece started with the compelling curves of a seashell, and then the brightness of the blue glaze reminded me of summer skies. I decided to go for maximum brilliance in color and make the grout lines an intense orange — the way hot sunshine feels in the northwest after so many grey months. Because this is a stand-alone art piece, rather than an architectural installation, some multi-media work is possible. I painted the grout with several layers of oil paint, finishing it with a wax sealant. These tiles have a more uniform finish, because they were fired in an electric kiln.
